ASTM A 335 P11 material is a chrome moly alloy to make seamless pipes with a high tensile strength of 415 MPa minimum and 205 MPa yield strength. With 1 to 1.5% chromium and 0.44 to 0.65 % molybdenum, it has high toughness to resist wear and tear for a long time.

How do you weld a P11 pipe?

P11 pipe has excellent creep strength at a temperature between 450 to 550 C or 850 to 1000 F. Hence it is essential to know how to weld it in the following steps.

  • Preheating the electrodes is essential before welding the pipe using electromagnetic coils to a temperature of 300 to 350 C or 550 to 650 F for one hour.
  • It is essential to keep the preservation temperature between 80 to 100 C or 175 to 225 F
  • Avoiding thermal quenching or shock during preheating of SA 335 gr P11 welded pipes is better. 
  • GTAW, or gas tungsten arc welding, produces the preliminary wedding seam, and SMAW, or submerged manual arc welding, is essential for covering the entire welding area of the pipe.
